OPERATION MPUKU - My response to Basson (2)

Re: Your previous email to me: Rodent Control Program in the area of Central.

My dear Mr Basson
I am in receipt of your email dated 30 August 2016 in which 23 people, of which only three I have copied in the mail, these being the Times Media news desk, the owner of the building I live in and the Mayor’s office, have been copied into the mail; the latter only because I was dealing with the Mayor’s office form the beginning.  I had no alternative to this because not one of your Metro departments answered telephone calls.  
The tone of your letter is disrespectful to say the least.  Calling me ignorant is highly disrespectful and unprofessional… because you do not know what knowledge I have, nor do you know the amount of research I have conducted into the rat epidemic, not only in the Metro but in all residential areas of South Africa.
For what reason the deaths and injuries caused by rats gets so little media attention, I can only speculate – the information is being suppressed for some or other reason.  The information would definitely be damaging to the tourism in our country.  This very email you have sent me is empirical evidence of a cover-up.  Either there is a cover-up by the South African government or you are totally inefficient and ineffectual in what you do at your Environmental Health Department, particularly with your Rodent Control.
I have not threatened you with the Mayor’s office – you are feeling threatened by my refusal to kowtow to anyone, and even less so with someone who is paid to do a job and is not doing it. My correspondence is obviously seen as a threat due to my researched knowledge of the subject at hand.  If you are feeling threatened by your own inadequacy, please don’t turn it around and make a comment like “Refrain from threatening me with the Mayor”.
Thank you for the following information – “The Plague Endemic area has been predetermined by the NDOH and the WHO”.    From previous correspondence this area is designated as Koega.  Because an area is designated a Plague Endemic Area does not mean that the area immediately adjacent to that area is safe from the threat of disease carrying rats which bite and cause the death of people.  Those who are particularly at risk are babies, the infirm and the prisoners. 
May I remind you that you do not work for the Mayor, but you work with the Mayor, and together the Metro Departments work for the people .  You are paid by our taxes. That is why you are called a civil servant.  You are a servant to the public.
I fully understand that the Mayor would not and should not go against National and International Law and Protocol.   However, you are simply not doing your job!  You are not in control the over-population of rats in our Metro.
“Seeing that you have picked up and “preserved” the dead rat which might have died from our rodenticides you may just as well throw it in the trash container.  Your one, (sic) dead rat is of no use to the disease preventative control program”.  This statement of yours is insolent and rude.  I again ask the question; Why would you not test this rat for diseases it may or may not be carrying?  It did not die from your ‘so called’ rodenticides, as you have stated.  It was very much alive, together with his family, in my kitchen.  Why would you be so unwilling to be open to the fact that your Plague Endemic area predermined by the NDOH and the WHO may need to be revised, since Koega is adjacent to the Metro?
As far as your NMMM Environmental Health sub-directorate having a “permanent, ongoing surveillance program is concerned, I can only say that the inspector from your department who came to do a site inspection said “Eyo…this is bad.  They must come and sort this out.  I will tell them”.
I understand that the last outbreak of the plague in this area was in 1981,    That statement is as crazy as saying all swans are white.  That is a guarantee of nothing.
I am particularly concerned about the number of babies, prisoners, the old and infirm people who are being bitten and have died from rat bites.  This over-population of rats the size of small cats has surely reached epidemic proportions.  May I add that the notorious “Central” area is part of the Heritage walk.   Our tourists will have rat companions walking alongside them as the rats are used to humans in their presence and do not run away.  They merely look at you and walk slowly on. 
You may say you have closed this case and you “shall not entertain your speculations any longer”.  My dear Mr Basson, I have not even started yet.  When our city and the cities and towns are cleared of disease carrying rodents, I will close the case.  I would just like to inform you that my particular home is now rodent free.  I am not doing this for my own benefit but for the benefit of all the peoples of our country.   For that reason, the case will not be closed, no matter what you say.
As opposed to your “THANX” at the end of your mail, I shall do it the right way.

OPERATION MPUKU: URGENT REQUEST FOR INTERVENTION BY PUBLIC HEALTH

Your email dated yesterday, 5 September 2016, copied to the Executive Mayor, Acting
City Manager and others refers.
I would like to refer to our telephonic discussion on the above subject matter and my
subsequent apology to yourself regarding the unacceptable conduct of our employee, Mr
Willem Basson, of whom action has already been taken against.
You may recall that I wanted to visit your house this week of 5 – 9 September 2016 or
whenever your are available with the Environmental Health Practitioners, in order to attend
to your complaint and conduct necessary inspection. You mentioned that you will not be
available this week but rather the following week. I undertook to make a visit personally
with relevant Environmental Health Officials whenever you are available and you agreed to
that arrangement.
Your email dated 5 September 2016, to the Times Media and Mr Willem Basson has now
come as a surprise to me and it creates confusion of your intentions. If anything has
changed from our last telephonic discussion, I should at least be informed so that I could
continue with suggested site visit and inspection.
Nevertheless, it is necessary that I inform you that through your complaint, Public Health

Directorate has decided to review and intensify its Vector Control Programme in PE
Central Area. The Roll-out Plan will be communicated to the relevant stakeholders and you
may be advised of its implementation.
For any further concerns regarding your complaint, I would like to deal with it directly.
Kindly advise my office on when you will be available for requested site visit and
inspection, at twiegand@mandelametro.gov.za / 041 505 4578.

I have already explained to you that NMMM  Environmental Health sub-directorate has a permanent, ongoing  surveillance program
and the last outbreak of Plague in this endemic area was in 1981.
This case is now closed and I shall not entertain your speculations any longer.

I said I never would would write a word about Eugene de Kock but ....

I think enough time has passed and that what I am about to share makes no difference at all.  We are still (I hope) a group of integrity and compassion – although there is always a rat in the mix.  I hope that the rats get trapped into cages never to see the light of day. May they experience even one third of the trauma that Eugene de Kock suffered in prison.  The job of defeating the rats from this group will be Michael Emil, Gert Fouche, Jacques van Heerden’s job. 
In May2015, it was discussed (between me Ben and by Marx) whether to start slowing down the nagging and letter writing process regarding Eugene de Kock’s parole.  I cannot remember the words verbatim, but it went somewhere along the lines of it being dangerous/political and maybe detrimental to Eugene; and maybe we were making it more difficult for him.   Now I have never met Eugene, except when he phoned me many months later… but that is another story.    It was suggested that I temper down my posts and try to stay calm and smooth the waters.  Well, me being me, I thought that was for the birds and balls to the wall I said said “Not a fuck!!!  We carry on until Eugene de Kock tells me with his own mouth to stop”.   From that date to the date when the world heard about his parole – a million and one things happened.  I could write a book on it all that would make Jansen’s book pale in comparison.  It was cloak and dagger – there were spies, double-agents and spooks.  I did not even trust Ben and certainly did not trust Marx – We all had our own informers in various places.  So I would act dumb until I was told something of an extremely sensitive nature and would very calmly say, “I know – I heard it week before last”.  Shit, I loved doing that to the main dudes that counted.  Woman can be just as astute as men.   My Fuck, but I would have made an excellent Mata Hari.   So, what do you think … shall I spill the beans on my diannelang.blogspot.co.za.

It was eight (8) months later that I was given an email written in May - but not addressed to me.  And then I learned. I got it from the horse's mouth.  Shut the group down.  Much happened during those months between May 2015 and his actual parole in January 2016.  I know a lot more than I am given credit for.   And after reading Jansen's pathetic attempt to encompass the enormity of the person who Eugene is - I could give her a run for her money.   I think it is time now to divulge the truth of what went down.   Forest fortuna adiuvat…Umi ngomlenze omnye ethlathini !

From Isolation to Triumph


Human isolation is the worst kind of punishment – not only for those who are isolated in prisons, but also for those who are chronically ill.  The greatest challenge is to learn to become your own best friend.  Friends you used to have eventually get on with their own lives and move on.  If the chronically ill person ends up with just one friend who still visits and accepts the new limitations of their friend, then one is very lucky indeed.  People move on and leave you behind.  You are no longer able to put in your emotional or social deposit into the relationship bank.  A relationship can be likened to a bank account.  For the account to move there must be movement from both sides.  Imagine that you invest a lot of time/money into a relationship/bank and when it is your turn to withdraw, the bank won’t give you money and the friend can’t give you time.   Friendships are a two way street, and unless you have a particularly strong bond, you will find yourself alone.  You are no longer able to meet for coffee.  You make plans to see someone, but invariably you cannot make it because you suddenly land up in hospital.  You are no longer able to socialize … no longer able to make great food, entertain … and life marches on without you.  Your friends slowly leave and even if you try your best to keep in contact with them via internet or the phone, you have nothing to tell them because you go nowhere and you see no-one.  You are left behind to stare at the four walls of your bedroom and if you are unlucky, the four walls of the hospital isolation ward become your whole life.  The only difference between the hospital room and your own as far as socializing is concerned, is that you see more of the people in the white uniforms and being at home you seldom see anyone other than your husband. Isolation and the lack of understanding of rare diseases by everyone, including the medical professionals, is the worst form of human suffering.  However, you will learn to become your own best friend.  You will find that you can do things you never thought you could do.  You will learn more about yourself than you ever thought possible.  You will begin to speak like a qualified medical doctor.  You will realize how strong you are when hope is all you have.  And finally, you will find contentment in your own spiritual and creative growth.  Your life will be full again.  It won’t be the life you had, but it will be a brand new one that you can re-write and create.
